Burglary charges
A Christchurch man was yesterday committed to the Supreme Court for trial on i four charges of burglary, ; allegedly committed with a I companion in Ashburton on 1 June 27. The defendant, Wayne ; Maurice Lepper, aged 28, unemployed (Mr M. S. Wilson) , pleaded not guilty in the | Magistrate’s Court, and ( elected jury trial on the joint , charges of burglary of the , Somerset Tavern, and of ' three dwellings. , The houses allegedly i broken into were in Oak i Grove, Manse Street, and i Middle Road. : The defendant was charged jointly with Mark Huia Bain i on all four charges. <
Evidence was given that Bain was convicted last month on three of the burglary charges, relating to the Somerset Tavern, and the houses in Oak Grove and Manse Street. He had pleaded guilty to the offences. The defendant was remanded on bail to September 20 pending his Supreme Court trial, by Mr C. O. Pilgrim and Miss J. Taylor, Justices of the Peace. Depositions of evidence from 23 prosecution witnesses were heard. Most evidence was submitted by consent of defence counsel in statement form. Mr Wilson made no submissions, and reserved his defence.
