Council attacks cuts
PA Auckland Proposed cuts in the production of local television programmes may drive more New Zealand artists out of the country, according to the director of the Arts Council (Mr M. Volkerling). Nearly 800 artists, writers, and actors had left New Zealand last year, mainly because of the low pay professional artists received in New Zealand, said Mr Volkerling.
The council decided that the chairman (Mr Hamish Keith) should approach the Minister of Broadcasting (Mr Templeton) to outline objections to the cuts. Mr Volkerling said the total allocation from broadcasting to actors last year had been only $BOO,OOO, and whenever there was a call for economy, cultural programmes were always the first to be axed.
