Indian P.M. resigns
NZPA-Reuter New Delhi The Indian Prime Minister (Mr Charan Singh) resigned yesterday after only 24 days in office and recommended that President Sanjiva Reddy hold a midterm General Election. The dramatic move came within an hour of an announcement by Mrs Indira Gandhi’s Congress (I.) Party that it ' would not support the Singh Government in a vote of confidence. Mr Singh, who knew he
could not win without Mrs Gandhi’s support, immediately called an emergency Cabinet meeting and decided to resign. Parliament had just assembled for a seven-hour debate on the confidence motion when the Speaker read out Mr Singh’s letter of resignation. Until the last moment Mr. Singh and his supporters in the coalition Government had hoped that Mrs Gandhi would either back them or remain neutral.
