Compulsory military training

Sir, — I sense from the tone of A. J. Vallance (August 17) that he enjoys the pattern of life in this democratic New Zealand and does not want it any other way. But this freedom is not gained easily, and should not be taken for granted. I wonder whether A. J. Vallance ever spares a thought for those thousands of servicemen who went through four years of discomfort and inconvenience when they fought to keep a democratic New Zealand they believed in? Faced with the same challenge which confronted the free world in 1939, I wonder if the opponents to C.M.T. would have the spunk to put on a uniform? However one may feel, military training brings out the best in most. Tolerance, understanding and fellowship replaced the selfishness and indifference which dominated one’s attitude before. ' Perhaps C.M.T. would help those people now who are seeking an identity. — Yours, etc.,

T. W. LESLIE. August 20, 1979.
