Student loses year’s notes

A girl university’ student suffered minor burns and irritation from smoke inhalation as she tried to rescue her year’s lecture notes from a burning house in Holly Road, St Albans, yesterday. She had managed to get out of the house before firemen arrived, but lost all her papers and other possessions.

She was taken by St John ambulance to Christchurch Hospital, where she was treated and discharged. Her name was not' available last evening. She had been alone in the house, where she flats with

several other students, when the fire broke out in her bedroom about 2 p.rn.. a Fire Service spokesman said. She had tried to smother the flames, but had been overcome once by smoke before escaping from the house. “She was lucky to get out. The place was absolutely full of smoke when we arrived,” he said. Firemen had to use breathing apparatus because of the dense smoke. They were able to contain the fire to the area of the girl’s bedroom, which was destroyed. The cause of the fire was not known last evening.
