Logging trials 'not understood’

Logging trials in the North Island’s Whirinaki Forest have been misunders t o o d by conservationists, the Forest Service Director of Research (Dr C. Bassett) has said. Research had to be done to improve techniques, so that dense podocarp stands could be maintained near their natural state even after being logged, Dr Bassett said. Three trial areas had been established, and the opening up of the first trial stand had been minimal even though 20 per cent of the trees were taken out.

Groups of trees would be felled in the other two trial areas.

Logging effects, if there were any, would be monitored over a long period. Results so far had been impressive, and could be similar to those obtained throughout the 18-year-old selective logging trial in Pureora Forest, Dr Bassett said.
