Service bridge to hospital

Sir, — Your report (August 9) on Hospital Board matters includes mention of the proposed service bridge across the Avon. The board’s case, finally based on the necessity for easier access by the Christchurch Fire Service, has brought a strong and very justifiable protest from its" own fire protection officer, Mr Hirst. He resents, quite naturally, the implied criticism that his department is inadequate to cope in an emergency. His attitude confirms also what any careful student of the case could detect at once as a specious argument and leaves the whole procedure open to question by the public. This application makes a mockery of town planning in its proper sense. — Yours, etc., V. F. JOBBERNS. August 9, 1979.
