South Island Movement
Sir, — It was very generous of you to let the National Party hold a conference before the South Island declares independence from the North Island. I would like to remind the South Islanders that after three and a half years of National Party government, the North Island is just as much divided as the South Island. Certainly we cannot claim the title of God’s own country any more; perhaps if we had some more people as outspoken as you folk in the South Island, we could have more democracy and less hypocrisy. I think one thing that should be done is to find out why so many New Zealanders are leaving the country; it would be a good idea if the news media would interview as many people as possible before their departure to other lands. — Yours, etc., PATRICK MOONEY, Johnsonville. July 31, 1979.
