Small farmers
Sir, — The Akaroa County Council is having second thoughts (“The Press,” July 30) about a place in the community for its small farmers — hobby farmers to members of this council — and I note that the chairman, Mr Brocherie, would now like to zone them. Where are the rights of the individual when bureaucracy dictates in such a manner? The economy, plus choice of living, will be the guide to these individuals as to what they do and where they live. Not very long ago deer-farming, kiwifruit production, fetta cheese production and now the production of Angora wool and rabbitmeat were in the category of “hobby” farming and Mr Brocherie cannot deny that the first has already taken a very important place in New Zealand’s economy and that the others have also a chance of doing so. The
greatest benefit to our economy and most easily achieved would be a reduction in the size of many of our large land-holdings. — Yours, etc.,
A. W. ERICSON, Akaroa.
