July road toll low
PA' Wellington Road deaths during July were the lowest for any month since 1964, and the lowest for July since 1963, the Minister of Transport (Mr McLachlan) said yesterday. Thirty-one people died on the roads during July, compared with 46 for the same month last year. This brings the total for the year to 296 — 91 fewer than for the first seven months of 1978.
"We have had drink- > driving blitzes during the last two Julys, ana the road toll for last month was less than half of that for July, 1977, when a horrifying record of 66 deaths was set,” he said. Petrol restrictions have had an effect, but more than half of the fatalities happened at week-ends, most of them between 10 p.m. on Saturday and 4 a.m. on Sunday.
