Refugee campaign

PA Auckland A campaign to raise funds for a ship to give emergency assistance to refugees afloat in the South China Sea has been launched in Auckland. Entitled “Operation Rescue,” the project will involve New Zealand volunteers including qualified mariners, boat and engine repair crews and medical teams. Repairs, provisions, fuel and medical aid would be

offered to refugees and any in danger of drowning would be rescued, said the director of the operation (Captain E< Ewbank). Thousands of dollars would be needed daily to provide a useful service, he said. Government approval for the mission will be sought next week when the Undersecretary of Labour (Mr Malcolm) returns from the United Nations refugee conference in Geneva.
