Facelift for houses

The Housing Corporation will buy 200 existing houses in central Christchurch for rental accommodation. The corporation was changing its policy of building State houses on the outskirts of cities, said its assistant director (housing), Mr C. Reid. This was in line with the Government’s new programme for community and housing improvement, to revive central urban areas, he said. The corporation would

also modernise 200 existing State rental houses, particularly multi-unit blocks, Mr Reid said. Tenants would be asked for suggestions on exterior remodelling, screen fencing, and landscaping, he said. Interior work would bring units up to modern standards. Mr Reid said that, at the time of building, demand had been so greaf that it was impossible to provide the full range of facilities.
