Brilliant squash battle

Bumside I took a Jour-point lead in. the men’s division one, squash competition for the Wilson Shield when it beat Christchurch 11, 8-2. The matches were keenly contested — three went the full distance. By far the best display was that put on by Neil Rush (Burnside) and Don Preston, the two number ones. Several plajers deserted the courts on which their own teams were playing to watch Preston prevail over Rush in a 70min. match. Some of the rallies were breathtaking, with winner after apparent winner returned as the players showed great speed around the court, chasing everything. Lloyd Williams had hopes of getting another two points for Christchurch H when he decisively won the first two games over Geoff Tait, but he lost the next two just as convincingly and then could not proceed from 6-5 in the fifth. Christchurch T’s 8-2 win over University I was notable for the' return of its top player, Rod; Hayes, after a five-week absence,! and a grand battle between Malcolm Forster (University) and Roger Monk. The two number threes had a very long fifth game and Monk held one match ball at 9-9 before conceding defeat. University TT stayed near the lead after getting a decision over Burnside n on a points countback with Alan Corkin a little disappointing in his threegame loss to Burnside’s Mark Crosbie in the final contest. Other features of this match were Hamish Dowell's first loss of the season — to Chris Wasley (Burnside 11) — and Paul Carpinter’s ability to hang on and beat Stuart Hargreaves after seeing a 7-2 lead in the fifth erode to match ball against him. Alter two successive wins,

Sumner knew its luck had to run out This time it failed to get a point against High School Old Boys 11, though John MacDougall fought very hard to spoil Malcolm Thompson's impressive run of victories and all the other sea-siders took at least one game off their opponents. Linwood played very well to take eight points against High School Old Boys I. Hibbert crushed Lindsay Walton in three and Grant Egan deservedly got his first success. In the women’s competition, Christchurch 1 extended its lead to a healthy 10 points with a clean sweep over Christchurch 111. Erin Hensley was unlucky enough to run into Wendy Dann’s racket and suffer a blow above the eye, forcing her to withdraw as the match reached an exciting stage.
