Surplus for development
The Christchurch City Council may gain a surplus of $138,000 from the development of residential land at the end of Fifield Terrace in Opawa. The money, or an equivalent amount in the meantime, will be used to develop nearby Hansens Park, beside the Heathcote River loop, as
playing fields and a reserve. The development of 13 council-owned residential sections will be made possible by the sale of 2.11 ha, confirmed this week, to the Rudolf Steiner School. The school paid $BO,OOO for the land, plus $7OOO as a contribution to sewer and rating costs.
Possession of the vacant site will be taken in November, and a complex -of classrooms will be built in the long run, from kindergarten to Form 7. The sale money will be used for the development and servicing of the area originally planned for housing, including the school site.
The council’s housing and property director (Mr K. J. McNeil) said that the sale of the school site was “a step forward” towards development of the park, depending on how well the adjacent residential sections sold.
Hansens Park is now used mainly for grazing. It is a former city dump.
