Strike action explained

The organiser of the Canterbury Drivers’ Union [Mr D. Adams) was on the ’receiving end,” at union anrest yesterday when he was chairman of a meeting jf members who are employed as taxi-drivers by the Blue Star and Gold Band tompanies in Christchurch. The meeting of 80 drivers

was called after they had been told last week they had to take part in the drivers’ strike. Mr Adams said that some members were angry about being involved in the strike and there was some talk of their breaking away from The union.

“I told them it would not be in their best interests to do that,” he said. Mr Adams explained to the taxi-drivers the reasons for the strike action. He said that the decision for drivers to strike in support of a general drivers’ award claims, was made at the half-yearly union meeting. That was when taxidrivers should have voiced their opposition. The next vote, after the breakdown of the general drivers’ award, was taken only on the question of support for a strike.
