Lyttelton building permits approved

Building in Lyttelton has increased by more than $370,000 in value as a result of permits approved at last evening’s meeting of the Lyttelton Borough Council.

The main items include $177,200 for the health centre to be built by Gibson and O’Connor, of Christchurch, and $89,350 for pensioner cottages, with Bryndwr Builders, Ltd, the successful tenderer. Most of the applications covered new dwellings, alterations, internal heating systems, and $5OOO for a swimming pool. The council also adopted a finance committee recommendation covering a policy for retaining walls in the borough. The council will accept responsibility for the repair and maintenance of retaining walls and batters that support roads vested in the council. If a wall or batter sup-

ports a private property, the responsibility will be vested in the property owner, but the council will reserve the right to take “special circumstances" into account. The finance committee also reported a gift by J. B. Hughes Motors, Ltd, towards a project for children in the Norman Kirk Memorial Park at Diamond Harbour.
