Postal rise altered

PA Wellington The increase in postal rates for registered publications will now be introduced in two stages. The Postmaster-General (Mr Couch) said yesterday the rise was to have taken effect on August 1.

However he said the Cabinet had decided that instead of the basic rate for articles up to 250 g rising from 3c to 9c, it would now go to 8c from August 1 and increase to 10c from April, 1980. In both cases there would be

higher charges for heavier items. Mr Couch said the rate for registered publications was well below cost, and the increase would ensure that users of this service made a reasonable contribution to the cost. This was consistent with the Government’s view that the postal service should pay its own way, but the staged approach will lessen the initial impact on users of this category, said Mr Couch.
