United striker in doubt

Trans Tours United’s talented striker, Richard Mulligan, is unlikely to play in his team's Rothmans Soccer League match with Manawatu United in Christchurch next week-end.

Mulligan left the field with a badly gashed leg on Sunday during United’s Adidas Chatham Cup quar-ter-final match with Woolston W.M.C. He had X-ray examinations yesterday and the extent of the injury should be known today.

According to the United manager (Mr Brian Hardman) Mulligan was in “a lot of pain” and, at this stage, is a very doubtful starter for Sunday’s match. If Mulligan is unable to play, Mr Hardman will be

without three first-choice players, with both Steve Sumner and Frank McKay suspended for the match after being sent off at the week-end.

Colin Curry and Barry Weymouth are likely to replace Sumner and McKay respectively but Mr Hardman is considering various possibilities to cover for Mulligan. One he might decide on is to push lan Park, United’s left back, forward to the front-line and bring Paul Bradshaw back into the defence after being dropped early in the season. Park has played with much success as a striker on many occasions, in past seasons for United.
