Sir, —I sincerely hope that some Maoris seek the Labour nomination for Christchurch Central to replace the recently lost, well-loved and respected Mr Barclay. In expressing this prayer, I am mindful of the increasing need to have Maori representation through general seats to help stem a gulf which is becoming apparent and threatening race relations in New Zealand. I trust in God but believe He needs help in this end from both the very able Maoris who can and should aspire to such positions, and also the New Zealand Labour Party which has been for so long the de facto guardian of the Maori people. —Yours, etc., KUKU KARAITIANA, Auckland, July 13, 1979,
