Chance Affair in winning trial

By

PAUL MEIN

Chance Affair did best of the 10 entrants on show for next week’s New Brighton Handicap at the Addington trials yesterday.

In a three-sided finish to i the main trial yesterday [Chance Affair narrowly beat Orfeo, whose run contained much, with a head to Carnival King in third place. Carnival King drove to the front early, with Chance Affair trailing, followed by Tribunal, Butler Belle and Motu Prince. Abbe Princess and Altamura both broke at the start.

Carnival King maintained his lead until just short of the line with Orfeo, near last with a round to go, taking advantage of inside gaps storming home into third. Tribunal was a useful fourth with Abbe Princess, let loose wide out with about 800 m to run, an eyecatching fifth. Crossfire which went with Abbe Princess when they sprinted, broke shortly after the final turn and finished well back. The winner paced the distance in 3min 30.85, the final 800 m in Imin I.Bs. Charles Twinkle, which is entered for the Farewell Handicap at New Brighton, showed that he was well forward for the task when he dashed home from the middle of the field to beat Philippa Frost and Best Of Fame in the C2 and C 3 Pace.

Late finding racing room, Charles Twinkle finished

[doggedly over the final 1200 m and held out a late claim from the fast-finishing Philippa Frost, back in midfield mostly, with the pacemaker, Best Of Fame, a length away in third placing. The maiden pacing events were won in promising style by Ardross (3min 33.55) and Tuatahi Chief (3min 33.85).

Ardross finished strongly to beat the pacemaker. Yosemite, by half a length in he first heat, and Tuatahi Chief led all the way in the hands of trainer Wes Butt in the second. Tuatahi Chief and Yosemite have both been nominated for the New Brighton meeting on July 21. Other New Brighton entrants to trial well were the maiden trotters, Michael Abbe and Bo Didley. Both did it all in front. Bii Didley winning by three lengths and a half and Michael Abbe by three lengths. Sam Roday adopted similar tactics for his win in 3min 37.55, three lengths clear of Master Brett and Roddy Dee. Bodene Lad and Lord Brandon had little trouble winning their two-year-old heats. Both are entrants for the July stakes at the New Brighton meeting and both led from start to finish. Bodene Lad was still well on the bit after his length win over Frosty Lopez and Chantilly Belle. Lord Brandon (Armbro I Del—Laneen), a brother to I the winners, Lord Armbro and Armbro Peter, was a

i comfortable length and a half victor over Wise han | ver and Koau Bret in 2mm 48.65.
