E.E.C. cuts butter levy
NZPA-Reuter Brussels The Common Market Commission decided yesterday to reduce by more than half the special levy imposed on the imports of New Zealand butter.
A commission spokesman said the levy would be reduced today from 106.64 units of accounts ($U5146.7) per 100 kg to 49.14 units of account ($U567.6).
Dairy experts of the nine European Economic Community countries were divided last week on whether the levy should be reduced. France, Ireland, and Denmark voted against. This left the final decision to the commission.
New Zealand is allowed to export up to 120,000 tonnes of butter to the E.E.C. this year, but sales in British shops have been slow, mainly because of competition from lower-priced butter from other E.E.C. countries.
The reduction in the levy will now make New Zealand butter more competitive. The E.E.C. also increased the subsidy on sales of British butter from the beginning of this month.
