Portfolios ‘not compatible’
PA Wellington An open lettef, urging the separation of the -‘incompatible” portfolios of environment, and land and forests — held by Mr V. S. Young — has been sent to the Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon) by the Environment and Conservation Organisations. The letter, from the chairman of E.C.0., Mr lan Prior, says that “unless the environment portfolio is elevated from its present Cinderella role and removed from its competition with other portfolios, we feel that the nation will continue to be poorly served.” The letter came after a resolution passed unanimously at E.C.O.’s annual
meeting that the portfolios were incompatible. “We hope that you will act to separate these portfolios, and believe that such a move will be widely supported," the letter said.
"Traditionally, the lands and forest portfolios have been exploitative ones based on quite different values from those prescribed by environmental limits. “Environmental resource constraints must be fundamental considerations in any decision-making process. Such considerations are hardly possible given this Cinderella role the environment portfolio has been relegated to,” Mr Prior wrote.
