Postal Centre delay

Although the building of the new Christchurch Postal Centre is now expected to be completed in November, it will be Christmas of next year before it can be used. The Deputy Chief Postmaster in Christchurch (Mr K. A. Mackey) said yesterday that an estimated $3 million worth of equipment would have to be installed to handle mail once the building was completed. The new centre might be ready for the 1980 Christmas postal rush, but it might not be until early 1981, he said. The new centre will not replace the existing post office in Cathedral Square.

The postmaster’s office and some others will stay there until a decision is made about the disposition of the old building. But all other postal functions will be transferred to the new centre once it is completed and fully equipped. At least 30 parking places would be provided at the new centre for private boxholders, said Mr Mackey. The estimated cost of the new centre in 1975 was $9.1 million. Mr Mackey said that no updated estimates had been made of the final cost — “but it is bound to be considerably higher than the 1975 figure.”
