Approval for trees
The McVicar Timber! Group, Ltd, can probably go ahead with plans to plant' pine trees on land by Dyers Pass Road. The Heathcote County Council’s town-planning committee last evening recommended that approval be given to the company’s plans to subdivide the land, formerly the old Cashmere Estate, subject to two normal conditions. The committee was told that certain objections to McVicar’s proposed planting had been received, notably from the Ministry of Works; but as the company had complied fully with existing
regulations in making its application there were no grounds for refusing it.
The committee further recommended that the McVicar group be advised that although commercial forestry was a predominant use in the council’s operative district scheme and the publicly notified district scheme re-| view, the future status of the! use in the completed review would depend on the outcome of the review process. However, there was nothing to stop McVicar’s from planting trees on the land, said the chairman (Cr J. M. McKenzie). Once the trees
had been planted it would be difficult to enforce any change in the property’s status.
The committee also received advice from the Licensing Control Commission granting a dancing and entertainment exemption to the Hillsborough Tavern. The commission has also given permission for a cover charge to be imposed in the tavern’s lounge bar. Because of complaints from residents in the area of excessive noise the term of the exemption will be only three months before a review.
