' Back-up’ ski squad

Canada will probably now send a “back-up squad” of four downhillers to New Zealand for the Europa F.I.S. (International Ski Federation) series at Mount Hutt which begins on July 24. No official confirmation of the team’s entry has been given but the names received in a telex on Sunday evening were Robin McLeish, Mike Irwin, Tim Gilhooly, Todd Brooker and Heinz Keppeler (coach). Several weeks ago Canada confirmed that it would send

its Olympic downhill team of Ken Read, Steve Podborski, Dave Murray, and Dave Irwin to train and race at Mount Hutt. Read is ranked equal fourth in the world with Podborski and Murray equal tenth. The first of the overseas teams to arrive for the series will be the Japanese contingent of six men and six women which flies into Christchurch tomorrow afternoon. The Canadians and the Americans are expected early next week.
