‘Tech.’ to change name to Chch Polytechnic
The Christchurch Technical Institute will soon be known as Christchurch Polytechnic. The institute’s council last night voted by 13 votes to two in favour of changing the name. Staff, pupils, and others! had divided opinions on a Change of name and it was up to the council to decide, said the acting chairman (Mr A. T. F. Beere). Mr W. J. A. Brittendsn said that Christchurch Tech-1 nical Institute was a "visually and verbally awk-i
ward title.” Polytechnic! i meant "many arts”, and bet-'I ter described what the institute was doing. ' I > Mr A. M. Ireland said rhe ' staff supported the name : polytechnic which was n; |line with the institute’s new!' and developing image in the; l ; I community. . | The council also voted unanimously to support mi l principle the “New Zealand Pride Year” planned by Jay-1' -cees for 1980. It was decided to support • the Jaycee’s campaign ;n- -. stead of a proposed “Back] ■I New Zealand" campaign.
■ The Jaycees’ interim plan for their campaign includes themes for each month of the year. The theme for March will be “Education and Service Clubs” and the 'institute will plan activities to coincide with the opening of its new buildings that month. Suggested activities include an address from the Minister of Education (Mr i Wellington) a church parade, I a Bavarian evening, a recreational display, and other programmes involving staff 'and students.
