Popular garages
The timber framed metal weatherboard garage is one of the most popular garages built in New Zealand these days. Once painted, these buildings assume the soft, pleasing lines of a conventional weatherboard house but have the added advantage that they are only a fraction of the price of the real thing. And the painting itself presents no problem because with advances in modern paint technology, excellent durability can now be achieved on these surfaces. One of the -reasons this type of garage enjoys such popularity is the speed with which it can be erected, thus ensuring a very low labour content and a clean efficient service. For instance the labour content on a large double garage is appreciably less than $l5O. This together with the more than competitive material content, makes a very attractive proposition from the buyers point of view. As a result manufacturers are adamant that prospective purchasers closely compare their “complete on site” to the “kitset” and “build your .own” type of garage. In most cases the difference in price will be surprisingly small — generally much less than the $l5O mentioned above. In fact most people these days do not find the savings in cost sufficient to compensate them for the many week-ends invariably spent building their own garage.
However, for the home handyman type, prospective clients are welcome to do their own concrete floors and they will be given helpful details from the manufacturer showing them exactly how to go about this.
Included in the price of these garages are doors, windows, spouting and downpipes together with the cost of drawing up and obtaining the permit. Aside from their pleasing appearance and speed with which they are erected, another factor in the rapid growth of this type of building is their adaptability. They are readily converted to offices, sleepouts, small flats, factories etc. They are als.o ideal for the man who wants a home workshop. The timber frame makes them ideal for lining or nailing up shelves, benches, hooks etc.
