The economy
Sir, — In his directive not to blame the Prime Minister for our country’s ills, N. E. Herbert (July 6) overlooks the fact that it was Mr Muldoon himself who promised to cure our economic ills. Unfortunately, no matter how hard the ordinary Kiwi works, as soon as there is the slightest sign of expansion in the internal economy our Minister of Finance pounces on it, thus curtailing any possibility of improvement for anybody. Record overseas debts; high internal deficit; high unemployment; everincreasing cost of living; high inflation rate; mass emigration are all negative situations totally beyond the control of the ordinary guy. Add to the foregoing, the constant snide criticism of the media, plus other dictatorial tendencies including his deliberate belligerent confrontation of the unions and the picture can hardly be presented in the context of a totally blameless leader. — Yours, etc. ARTHUR MAY. July 6, 1979.
