The Queen and nuclear weapons
Sir, — I agree with Harold Evans and the other signatories of July 3. What the Queen or her speechwriters fail to realise is that no generation has the right to hold as a threat to generations of unborn children the threat of nuclear warfare, as the radioactivity lives for hundreds of years. As for R. V. Shaw’s statement (July 6), I find it nauseating humbug. Since when, in a democracy, has the right of citizens to criticise been curtailed because it is aimed at a Queen; a monarch who in her country might bring in dollars from tourists but does nothing for New Zealanders. Let R. V. Shaw speak for himself; I have never had a vote on whether I want the Queen of England to be “my Queen.” — Yours, etc., M. O’NEILL. July 7, 1979.
