Corn for oil
Sir, — The news that the Arab oil producing countries are siding with the Palestinians “against countries which support Israel” places the American nation in a dilemma not easily solved. It is of special interest to me that the Russian grain yield has declined over a number of years, leaving the Soviet Union no alternative but to import grain from the West, whose granaries are overflowing from bumper harvests. The Soviet Union is the world’s largest oil producer (Saudi Arabia the world’s largest oil exporter), I suggest the West trade corn for oil. Sounds feasible to me. Years ago R.O.P. (Russian Oil Produce) was obtainable in Britain at a lesser price. — Yours, etc., A. DELHANTY. July 6, 1979.
