I Special correspondent Nelson The South Islands top women, golfers were forced to bow to [tne might of the North at the-week-end After three rounds played in wet. miserable conditions, the* North retained the Betty: Fullerton-Smith Shield by a stag-; goring 45-stroke margin. As there was only one stroke difference last year the South’s: best might well feel despondent * Heather Ryan (Putaururui! won the Susan Grigg Rose Bowi for the best individual performance with the outcome in doubt until the last hole. Auckland’s Kaye Maxwell was just a stroke behind. Miss Ryan served early notice of her form with a 73 in the practice round following it with another 73 in the first round. Throughout the two days the strongly built girl hit the ball with tremendous force and chipped neatly. After the final round Miss B. From these trials five players will be chosen for the Commonwealth tournament at Perth the following month. The trialists are:— J. Arnold, Miss Ryan (Waikato); S. Bishop (Canterbury); L. Douglas (Southland); A. Hasey. C. Kingham, Miss Maxwell (Auckland); B. Rhodes »Bay of Plenty-Thames Valley). Reserve: J. Malcolm (Waikato). Two youngsters to impress were Janice Arnold (Morrinsville) and Jan Scandrett (Otago). Miss Arnold came into prominence last year when she represented New Zealand in the Tasman Cup.
