Mt Wellington superb in soccer win

Mount Wellington’s outstanding form in this year’s Rothmans Soccer League reached its peak yesterday when it crushed Wellington Diamond United, 7-0, in Wellington. It was one of the biggest winning margins in the 10year history of the league, ironically it was W.D.U. which was involved in the biggest wanning margin in the league when, in 1974, the year it was relegated, it beat Eastern Suburbs, 8-0. It was a superb all-em-bracing performance from the Mount. Brian Turner scored a hat-trick, giving him 12 goals for the competition, Clive Campbell scored twice, the best two goals of the game, giving him 11 goals to date, and Keith Nelson scored twice to take his tally to eight. W.D.U. was handicapped by the absence of its key defender, Mike Semenoff, but it is highly doubtful that his presence would have made a significant difference. The Mount now leads the rest of the league field by nine points. It is averaging over three goals a game and has conceded only 11 in its 14 games. None of the Mount’s closest rivals could win yesterday. Hanimex United dropped a point in a 1-1 draw with Courier Rangers, while Trans Tours United was generally unimpressive in playing out a goal-less draw with Manawatu United.
