Sailing triumph for Canty crew
Bret de Thier and Steve Moffatt, the accomplished Canterbury Tornado catamaran crew, yesterday clinched victory in one of yachting’s classic centreboard events.
Their over-all victory in the Tornado class at the prestigious Kiel regatta in Germany was the first such triumph by South Island yachtsmen and probably the first New Zealand success.
To finish ahead of the world’s best multi-hull sailors, de Thier and Moffatt had to overcome the obstacles of competing out of season, using a borrowed boat, and combating wind conditions that were
far lighter than is their preference.
Behind de Thier and Moffatt (who conceded 32.7 points) were the illustrious European skippers, Victor Potapov (Russia, 44.7), 8 Joerg Spengler (West Germany, 59), and Reg White (Britain, 61). Potapov and White have held world titles.
De Thier and Moffatt, the co-holders of the New Zealand Tornado title, were somewhat disappointing in the preOlympic trials at Auckland last Easter, but must have had their confidence considerably boosted for the world contest which starts at Kiel tomorrow.
