Tour protests?
PA Auckland The touring French rugby team could be subject to protests from both the Citizens’ Association for Racial Equality and the Halt All Racist iTours organisation. ! It all depends on whether ! the French team will play in i South Africa if the Spring|boks’ planned tour of France i is cancelled. ' "We do not know if they I will play in South Africa, ’ said the secretary of C.A.R.E. (Mr T. O. Newnham) last i evening. "But if they do, we will protest throughout the I New Zealand tour."
Mr Newnham said the two protest groups had asked for a meeting with French tour officials so that they could discover whether any tour of South Africa was planned. The South African rugby team is due to tour France later this year but the French Government has opposed the tour. When the French team arrived in New Zealand last week, the manager (Mr Yves Noe) said that if the Springbok tour was cancelled, ! France might tour South Africa.
