Rally to Adams
PA Blenheim. The Auckland driver. Paul Adams (Escort RS1800) won the second round of the Nexv Zealand rally championship, after a fellow Aucklander. Blair Robson, crippled his car in a crash on the last special stage yesterday. Robson was ahead of Adams as they started the last stage on the wax back to Blenheim early yesterdav morning, but the arduous 500 km rally had taken its toll on Robson and lie slid into a post at a cattle stop on the Port Underwood road. Although [.still able to drive his Ford Escort IRSIBOO, Robson was slowed by the crash and lost a valuable two minutes. Adams revelled m the sle ®P» twisty gravel road and was able to make up enough time to take the ex ent from Robson. The first round winner. Howard Collier (Auckland. Escort), xvas Hhe first casualty, crashing badly ! on Taylor Pass in the first spec- ! ial stage. The seventh stage
claimed two of New Zealands best when Jim Donald 'Auckland) blew his Escort's different ial and Mike Marshall (Auckland. Escort) blew a head gasket. The Timaru driver Leo Leonard also fell bv the wayside. Third place in the rally went .o Auckland’s John Woolf 'Mazda RX3i and fourth to Tokoroa s Eony Teesdale 'Escort RSlBOO*. The Rotorua driver. Paddy Davidson. was in good form in his Escort 1600. finishing fifth ahead of man v of hia more fancied rivals. The invitation rally run in conjunction saw the first two seeds finish first and second. Trevor Crowe (Christchurch) drove hia Avenger V 8 to an oasv first place ahead of Timaru‘s Warren Burt (Toyota Corolla 1300). Third place went to Blenheim s Dean Cameron (Escort 1600) and fourth and fifth were the Christchurch drivers. Peter Johnson Vauxhall Vita 1600* and Richard Byrne (Mazda RX3*.
