Approval for woman envoy
NZPA ' Washington President Carter has nominated Anne Clark Martindell, iged 64, to be the next United States Ambassador to Mew Zealand. It was disclosed last week -.hat Mrs Martindell would be chosen for the post, but the White House announcement was not made until after approval of the appointment had come from New Zealand. Mrs Martindell, a New Jersey Democrat with close ties to the Carter Administration through her friendship with Vice-President Walter Mon-
dale, has been director of the State Department's Foreign Disaster Relief Co-ordination Centre since 1977. Before that she served a four-year term in the New Jersey Senate. She is expected to arrive in Wellington in the first or second week of July. She is also likely to be present at the Anzus Council meeting in Canberra on July 4 and 5. Mrs Martindell will take over from Mr Armistead Selden, whose five-year-term as ambassador ended officially on May 7 31. She will also be accredited to Western Samoa.
