Welshman takes top post with Seaport

A Welshman with pro-All Black leanings, Captain John T. Owen, is now Lyttelton manager for Seaport Operations, Ltd. He recently arrived from New Plymouth to complete the company’s reorganisation at the port, to add specialist supervision of stevedoring services. Captain Owen formed a desire tor shore life after surviving a cyclone while commanding the Wellington Harbour Board’s tug Tiakina on her delivery voyage from England to New Zealand. His sea career started as a cadet during World War Two. He subsequently served on Port Line vessels. Captain Owen came ashore at Auckland to join the then New Zealand Shipping Company. Various mergers subsequently took him to Timaru and then New Plymouth as manager of Seaport Operations. He opened the Taranaki branch of Seatrans, Ltd. In 1977, to control ships’ agency work and marketing throughout the province.

His wife is a former National Airways Corporation 1 air hostess. She also flew with Canadian Pacific Airlines before coming to New Zealand to form the “Folded Wings Association” for air hostesses who no longer fly. * * *
