No glow-worm sales for Japanese

PA Auckland Mr Toshiaki Hashimoto, a Japanese who wishes to take I glow-worms from the Waitomo caves to Japan, is likely to be disappointed. His request for the worms to install in caves in Japan is not the first to be made. Earlier inquiries have come from Japan and Britain, but the Tourist Hotel Corporation, which administers the Waitomo caves has declined to export any glow-worms. “These are indigenous to

Waitomo,” a spokesman said. “They occupy a very specialised ecological niche and are most selective in their food sources.” It was highly unlikely they would either feed or survive if they were transferred. Mr Hashimoto has been seeking the glow-worms for the famed Akiyoshi-Do caves. He sees the idea as a symbol of friendship between New Zealand and Japan and as something which would promote understanding.
