Building to come down
A Christchurch city-centre building that is said to be an earthquake risk will come down soon to make way for retail redevelopment. Present uses of the 100-year-old building, at the north-west comer of the Cashel Street-Colombo Street intersection, include a chemist’s shop, a wool shop, and a shoe shop. The cost of securing the building against collapse in a moderate earthquake would approach the cost of a new building, the City Council’s buildings engineer (Mr St. G. W. Chapman) has told a town-planning hearing. The owners acknowledged that the building was “economically irreparable.”
