OTAGO HOSPITAL BOARD UNIVERSITY OF OTAGO MEDICAL SCHOOL REGISTRARS IN PATHOLOGY 1979-80 APPLICATIONS ARE INVITED from suitably qualified medical graduates for the positions of Registrar in Pathology in the Department of Diagnostic Laboratory Services in the Dunedin Hospital. Appointees would have teaching duties with both Medical and Dental students and would have the designated status of Clinical Tutor in the University of Otago Department of Pathology Such teaching duties have been shown to be of considerable help in the preparation for postgraduate examinations. The Diagnostic Laboratory Services of the Dunedin Hospital and the University of Otago Department of Pathology are recognised for training in all components of the postgraduate programmes of the Coiiege of Pathologists of Australia. Registrars are also encouraged to prepare for the Diploma in Clinical Pathology (D.C.P.) Otago, as a means of obtaining . a sound basic training in all four main subspecialties of Pathology (Anatomic Pathology, Haematology, Microbiology and Chemical Pathology). The D.C.P. (Otago) is recognised as a higher qualification in Pathology and can be completed within a three year period of training. This is especially valuable for trainees who intend sitting the F.R.C.P.A. in one subspecialty. There is an active personalised postgraduate training programme in all branches of Pathology run by the senior professional staff of the Departments which is designed to prepare candidate for both the F.R.C.P.A. Appointees wouid have duties in teaching medicai students and would have the designated status of Clinical Tutor in the University of Otago. Candidates must have been qualified for two years and their qualifications must be registrable in New Zealand. The position is fully recognised for training purposes. Depending on experience, the appointment could be at Junior Registrar or .Senior Registrar level; no previous experience of the specialty is required for the appointment at Junior Registrar level. Active encouragement is given for Registrars to obtain both Part I and Part II of the F.R.A.C.S. examination. It is practicable for a Junior Registrar to attend the highly successful Dunedin Part I F.R.A.C.S. course; previous Registrars have passed the Part I examination whilst holding the post. Opportunities for E.N.T. trainees to widen their general surgical experience can be arranged to Suit individual requirements. A full range of E.N.T. surgery, including microsurgery and head and neck surgery, is undertaken. The department has 11,000 outpatient attendances and 1000 operations per annum. Two whole time consultants ensure that there is adequate supervision and teaching of trainees. Opportunities for promotion to consultant status in E.N.T. Surgery are excellent in New Zealand.
