Survey on learning difficulties

Sir, — Your report (June 12) concerning a survey of children with learning difficulties refers to Speld as “a group of parents concerned about learning difficulties in children.” This gives the incorrect impression that Speld has no professional expertise. Speld consists of both educationists and parents. In fact Speld was started in New Zealand in 1971 by a group of concerned educationists in Christchurch who were: Brother Keane, principal, Marylands School; Miss Goldsbrough, principal. School for the Physically Handicapped; Mr Valder, principal, Cathedral Grammar School; Mr Martin, recently retired principal, Fendalton School; Miss Musgrave, speech therapist; Dr Seabrook, national adviser for speech therapists, lecturer in speech therapy at Christchurch Teachers’ College; Mr Nelson, senior psychologist, Department of Education; Dr Field, recently retired professor of education, University of Canterbury. Five hundred parents and teachers attended the first public meeting in Christchurch, chaired by the Mayor, Mr Guthrey, to voice a growing concern over the literacy standards of out 1 children. — Yours, etc., FRANK GAIR.

President, Speld N.Z. June 13, 1979.
