Dramatic last bowl
PA Wanganui A last-bowl success by the pair of Trevor Wright and Paifdy Troy secured Waikato ita second win of the 1979 national indoor bowls championships, in Wanganui last evening. Troy, forced to an extra head, saw a thunderous drive pay off for a 16-15 victory over an unlucky Horowhenua pair of Robin Metcalfe and David Walker in the championship’s second dramatic final in as many days. On Wednesday evening another Waikato man, Robert Frelen, won the singles by a single point margin from the well performed Aucklander, Kirs Kathy Smith. But last evening’s pairs final was even better, the contestants matching bowl for bowl through a brilliant contest. The Horowhenua men, unknown on the national scene, raced away to an early 9-1 lead, but Waikato mounted a strong come-back, culminated by drawing level on the eighteenth and final end.
The Foxton Beach brothers-in-law seemed set for victory untU Troy unleashed his thunderbolt drive with his final delivery to snatch success. Earlier, Troy had accounted for another Waikato pair, Kevin Boothby and Graham Pedersen, 8-4, while Walker surprised by comprehensively downing fhe Canterbury bowlers.
