Late sport Great badminton win for Livingston
PA Auckland Ross Livingston, of New Zealand, recovered from one game down and trailing 3-9 in the second, to score perhaps the finest badminton victory in a notable career at Badminton Hall, Auckland, last evening. It was achieved against the Indonesian Dhany Sartika who, only last week-end beat Svend Pri, of Denmark, to win the Silver Bowl tournament in Melbourne.
The triumph of Livingston, a former Australian, but a New Zealand representative since 1974, set the Yonex-Pacific tournament alight on this, the second night of the five-day tournament. It even eclipsed two other shock results. In the first match to be decided, Haryanto Saputra, of Indonesia, defeated the celebrated Dane, Pri, winner of the 1975 AU-England title, in straight games. And halfway through the evening the 19-year-old Englishwoman, Karen Bridge, beat Saorl Kondo, of Japan, runner-up in the All-England women’s singles this year. In analysing his victory, Livingston said that when well behind he had to go for everything and take the net.
"I think Dhany was going so well, he started to ease oft,” said Livingston. The big question at the start of the final game was whether Livingston could maintain the splendid touch that had marked his come-back.
Livingston went to 13-9 and victory was just two points away. Then came an agonising few moments in which both men muffed their services. But Livingston’s composure returned and he took the match Results:—
