Railway talks?
PA Wellington The Silver Star dispute widened yesterday when the Minister of Transport (Mr McLachlan) and the Acting Minister of Labour (Mr Thompson) were called in to discuss it.
The Ministers spent more than five hours at Parliament waiting to talk to National Union of Railwaymen officials about a ban on handling consignments of freight-forward goods. The Wellington and Christchurch branches imposed the ban at midnight on Wednesday, and Auckland began a similar one at midnight last night as a protest against the Silver Star express’s being temporarily withdrawn.
But messages to New Zealand Railways officials to talk to the Ministers were not acknowledged. It is hoped to hold a meeting this morning to persuade the union to lift its ban and resume talks on the redeployment of staff no longer needed on long-distance trains.
