ROLE REVERSAL
PA Auckland Six of New Zealand’s top car rally drivers are to drive horses in a special exhibition pacing event at the second and concluding session of the New Zealand Juvenile Championship carnival at Alexandra Park tomorrow week.
Top trotting drivers, on the other hand, will do several circuits of the track as navigators in rally cars. The session will be known as “Motor Sport Night.” The car drivers have been practising with their unaccustomed one-horsepower vehicles on training tracks around the country. The exhibition has been arranged with the Auckland Trotting Club’s blessing by the Auckland horsemen’s and trainers’ association, which is providing the horses.
The Masport rally team’s Escort cars will be on display, as will, for the first time in public in New Zealand, the specially prepared car that the Finnish driver, Hannu Mikkola, will be driving in the Motoguard Rally in New Zealand in July. All the cars will do several circuits of the track, with top trotting drivers acting as navigators.
Some unusual prizes have been donated for the Masport Handicap: the winning driver will receive a rotary hoe, and the runner up a motor lawnmower.
