Pioneer climber dead
A former well-known Mid- ! Canterbury mountaineer Miss E. K. “Chub” Brown ; has died in Christchurch ’ after a brief illness. She was ‘ aged 80. Miss Brown was among the leading women climbers during the 1920 s and 19305. ; Accompanied by the great guides of the period, Mick Bowie, Jack Cox, the Graham brothers of Franz Josef, and others, she climbed ■ many peaks, of more than 1 10,000 ft, including Cook, ' Malte Brun and Elie de 1 Beaumont. Her time for the ascent of [ Mount Cook via the Linda [ Glacier in 1936 of 11.5 hours 1 was a record for women 1 climbers which stood for ; many years. ' She moved to Christchurch after the sale of the 1 family farm at Wakanui in 1 the early 1950 s and became ’ an active member of the Red i Cross, serving the Meals on ■ Wheels project for many , years. , Miss Brown is survived by her sister, Mrs J. R. Clayton ! of St Andrew’s Hill, Christchurch. _
