Rescuers’ brave bid in vain
PA Auckland Would-be rescuers broke windows with a spade and a tree branch in a vain bid to save a Northcote, Auckland, man who died in a fire at his home yesterday. A relative identified the body as that of. T ■ James Campbell Stewart, aged 76, who lived alone at the Queen Street house.
For one of Mr Stewart’s friends who tried to break through the wall of flames, Mr Nino Dozzi, the fire was a tragic reminder of his mother's death last year. Mr Dozzi’s mother died in a house fire “just round the corner.” Mr Dozzi and Mr L. Wilson were the men who tried to break into the burning three-bedraomed house with a spade and branch. “It was just impossible. As soon as we broke the windows, all the smoke and fire poured out,” said Mr Dozzi. “Mr Stewart usually slept in the sunroom at the front of the house, where the fire was centred.”
