Intersection lights
Sir, — Having had the difficulty of trying to cross the intersection of High Street and Tuam Street on more than one occasion, I cannot understand why ths Christchurch City Council has not undertaken to have lights installed at this crossing. There seems to be a consistently heavy flow of both motor and pedestrian traffic meeting at this point and yet there is not even a give-way sign to help ease the confusion. Is it not time something was done before a serious accident occurs? — .Yours, etc., JILLIAN GRANT. May 28, 1979. [The City Engineer, Mr P. G. Scoular, replies: “The problems at this intersection are under investigation. It is acknowledged that traffic behaviour and the accident record are unsatisfactory and several ways of resolving the problems are being considered. While traffic signals would reduce confusion they would not necessarily make the intersection safer.”]
