Sea travel

Sir, — Arnold J. Baldwin says (June 8) “a return to ships as passenger vehicles would be more sensible than the continuing use of these insane aircraft”. Yes, more sensible, and more pleasurable. I enjoyed the 30 days sea cruise from London to Sydney in 1964 at a time when it was cheaper to travel by sea. Today sea travel fares have outstripped the air fares by far, the result of crippling high wages and food prices. In round figures jet planes travel 10 times faster than ocean liners but on the other hand ocean liners carry 10 times as many passengers. But is Mr Baldwin right when he says “and think of the huge savings of energy”? — Yours, A. DELHANTY. June 11, 1979.
