Consulate’s role in immigration

Sir, —- I refer to the report (“The Press,” June 8) on comments made by the Rev. J. Consedine about the South African Consulate being an “essential link” in the Government’s immigration policy. The Consulate plays no part in the immigration of South Africans to New Zealand. Prospective immigrants are required to deal directly with the De-

partment of Labour in Wellington. My own impression was that the Consulate’s function was to provide material for a programme of adverse publicity about New Zealand promoted by the South African Government as a means of discouraging emigration. Given the attitude in South Africa to emigration it would be impossible for the Consulate to be fulfilling the role depicted by Father Consedine. — Yours, etc.,

J. M. KENNEDY. June 10, 1979.
